Gildan originated as a military base during the first war thousands of years ago, and later became the central city of the kingdom of Gildan. The city was initially designed as a castle surrounded by a wall, with the city located inside the wall. As time passed, the city expanded beyond the wall and today it houses nearly half a million people.
Two regiments of cheval soldiers, comprising a total of one thousand cavalrymen, are stationed at Gildan to serve as the first line of defense against any invasion from Tropo. Despite being highly trained, these soldiers have not had any experience in a conflict in almost two hundred years.
The castle is surrounded by a large defensive wall, where the cheval (cavalry) are stationed. Inside the wall and the castle, the cheval are stationed for the purpose of defending the castle from any attack. A wide moat encircles the wall, which is now used mainly for fishing and recreational activities for the citizens of Gildan.
Gildan is a prominent trading city that shares its borders with Tropo and Ellender. The city's major exports include weapons, livestock, horses as well as farming products.
Most of the affluent merchants and Lords prefer to reside in or around Gildan, rather than Ilscent, where the King's palace is located. Gildan has grown to become one of the wealthiest cities, but its prosperity has also attracted vices like greed, crime and corruption.
Gildan is known to be one of the most progressive cities, accommodating people of all races, genders, and most lifestyles. It is the only city in the Kingdom that allows regulated gambling and prostitution. Although most of Tropo's citizens follow the old gods (angels), religion is not commonly practiced in Gildan. As a result, the city attracts individuals who are free from religious and social taboos.
Gildan boasts the largest library and university in the Kingdom, and has a forward-thinking community. Some of the most talented artists in the Kingdom hail from Gildan, but it is also home to some of society's most dangerous criminals.
Gildan boasts the largest black market in the area, where all kinds of illegal and stolen goods can be found. The city militia mostly ignores the black market, yet it remains hidden from the authorities.
Gildan is a highly diverse city, but it is also known for being one of the most expensive places to live in. Despite this, the city has a reputation for attracting the poor and homeless due to the generosity of its citizens towards those in need, which sets it apart from other cities.
